Established in 1982, Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) is recognized as one of the leading and most respected healthcare institutions in Taiwan. As one of the public medical center in  Taiwan, TCVGH is a trusted tertiary healthcare provider with over 1,600 beds and 6,000 employees, handling over 8,500 outpatient visits daily. TCVGH has built a reputation for its excellence in quality care by providing a comprehensive range of medical services in a variety of specialized fields. The present superintendent, Prof. Shih-An Chen, has been dedicated to developing the hospital into a leading-edge smart healthcare facility, emphasizing on advanced medical technologies and precision medicine. Dr. Chen, along with all members of the hospital team provides high-quality medical services, while also building a comfortable and pleasant environment for both its patients and employees.
Beginning in 1987, the team making up TCVGH’s Smart Healthcare program began creating the Electronic Health Information System (E-HIS). In 2009, TCVGH started to implement the use of electronic medical records. Due to the great success seen in the hospital-wide E-HIS, TCVGH earned the Smart Institution Award during the National Healthcare Quality Award ceremony organized by the Joint Commission of Taiwan in both 2015 and 2019. The excellent E-HIS was then successfully introduced into our 12 satellite Veteran Hospitals in the year 2020. In September 2022, TCVGH was ranked 254th amongst the World's Best 300 Smart Hospitals, a 2023 US Newsweek publication announced, and was the only hospital who had earned a place on the list amongst Taiwan, China and Hong Kong.
TCVGH established the Center of Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine in order to develop new technology for the treatment of cancers, as well as acute, severe, difficult and rare diseases. Through evidence-based genetic testing and analysis, TCVGH provides tailor-made personalized medicine. Additionally, TCVGH has set up both a genetic laboratory and stem cell laboratory, thus making it one of the medical centers in Taiwan possessing the ability to provide chimeric antigen receptor T-cell CAR-T therapy. 
TCVGH has made leading achievements within the Taiwan medical society in the fields of heart and liver transplantation, endoscopic surgery, and surgical navigation and monitoring systems. Its catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmia and children’s interventional cardiac catheterization treatments have established many ground-breaking procedures now being put in place in  Asia. TCVGH initiated the routine clinical use of the Da Vinci robotic arm in Taiwan. Currently, the three departments of Urology, Colorectal Surgery and Head and Neck Surgery at TCVGH have achieved the Center of Excellence for the Observation and Emulation of Da Vinci Robotic Arm Surgery. TCVGH has received an awarded from the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology as being a Center of Excellence, and has also been recognized as an International Diabetes Federation Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care.
TCVGH has received the Accreditation of Teaching Hospitals for Physicians and Medical Personnel and continuously trains more than 2,000 professionals annually. The facility also became the teaching hospital for the Post-Baccalaureate Medical School, National Chung Hsing University in the year 2022. In the realm of research, TCVGH has cooperated with National Chung Hsing University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Academia Sinica, National Applied Research Laboratories, National Health Research Institutes and several major research institutions and universities, allowing us to continually conduct clinical trials and actively promote Industry-Government-Academy cooperation. TCVGH has received the Executive Yuan's "Government Service Award" in the years 2010, 2016, 2019 and 2022, and will continue to be enthusiastically committed to improving our quality of service.
The facility’s International Medical Service Center was established in 2007, and receives more than 10,000 annual visits from both foreign residents and travelers in Taiwan. TCVGH has executed national-level medical cooperation programs and on an international level has sent medical mission teams to Vietnam, Thailand and the Republic of Nauru. Emergency medical assistance is also provided to overseas Taiwanese and foreigners who come to Taiwan seeking both emergency and cutting-edge medical treatments. For purposes of global exchange activities, TCVGH provides personnel training, co-organized seminars and sign Memorandums of Understanding.
