Treatment introduction
The skull base is the most inferior area of the skull and separates the brain from other facial structures. There are 5 bones that make up the base of the skull. They are the ethmoid, sphenoid, occipital, paired frontal, and paired temporal bones. This anatomic region is complex and poses surgical challenges for neurosurgeons. The skull base can be subdivided into 3 regions: the anterior, middle, and posterior cranial fossae. Skull base surgery uses different approaches to remove a brain tumour or vascular lesions located at the skull base. Diagnosis: Brain MRI is used to spot skull base lesions. Staging: Based on World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumours of the central nervous system, Grades 1-4. Treatment: Endoscopic surgery or Microscopic surgery Notes: Some benign brain tumours can compress the brain stem, which can cause the same effect as malignant tumours.
