Tracing back to the history of once flourish sisal industry is a trip to visit the past prosperous time in Hengchun Peninsula.In 1901, Americans first imported sisal into Taipei from Central America. In the next year, a Japanese agricultural technician tried to plant seedlings of sisal in Hengchun Tropical Plant Farm. Unexpectedly, the growth situation was great. In 1913, Taiwan Fiber Co. Ltd. of the day established Hengchun Sisal Factory in the current address which became the heart of promotion of growing sisal and rope manufacture. After restoration of Taiwan, the export markets are increasing. Therefore, the golden age of sisal industry has begun. Besides manufacturing ropes, sisal is also the material of producing sacks, carpets, brushes and shoes. Only the sisal production in Hengchun Peninsula used to account for 200 tons in a month. Therefore, the price of sisal was highly increasing and achieved an economic prosperity. Many Hengchun people became rich for growing sisals and their life standard was greatly improved. Growing sisals to build a mansion is the best description of it.With the rise of petrochemical industry, chemical nylon replaces sisals in material. The sisal industry declined. In 1987, after the last sisal fiber factory ended the business, the sisal industry became a history. In order to let people understand the development of the sisal industry, Kenting National Park Headquarters planed the original Hengchun Sisal Factory as Sisal Industry Historical Exhibision Hall.The facilities in Exhibition Hall include the shrine rule, fiber harvesting factory, employee’s dormitory, pulling sisal platforms, sun-drying fields and ponds left when Taiwan under Japanese and automatic fiber harvesting machines, light rails, trolleys, loadometer and sisal garden which were set after restoration of Taiwan.
