HongChaiKeng is a small and inconspicuous village with a population of nearly 300 people. The locals generally live on fishing. Therefore, there are fishing boats with full catches of fishes entering nearby HongChaiKeng fishing port everyday to supply the market demand. This is the most common daily life in HongChaiKeng. However, under the quiet sea level in HongChaiKeng, the undersea view is splendid and changeful. There are countless coral stones and colorful tropical fishes in groups. HongChaiKeng has gradually developed as a tourist port and a famous spot for undersea sightseeing.HongChai is a tree name in Chinese, and alias is Taiwan Aglaia which is native species of Taiwan and common in the area around Lanyu and HengChun Peninsula. They are primarily used for costal windbreak forests. This place used to abundant with lots of HongChai trees. That’s how the place name comes. However, HongChaiKeng has developed into a tourist attraction for its fascinating undersea ecology. Since the sea area near HongChaiKeng has the most coral reefs in the measure of area, kinds and quantity, it definitely attracts tourists.Since coral reefs are disadvantageous for developing a good port, in the west side of HengChun Peninsula, there are only Shan-Hai and HongChaiKeng fishing ports. Entries of these two ports face west and there are hills around as geographic shields. Therefore, in the high season of northeast monsoon, when chinook winds blows to Kenting downtown, HongChaiKeng is unusually quite. It is a very special phenomenon.If you are not interested in snorkeling, you could walk around in the village taking a look of the temple architecture here, the historic houses and fresh fishes in the market. If you want some sea wind, come to the sea wall or the pavilion at the port and listen to what sea wind is telling you quietly. And, the changeable clouds in the sky also travel with HongChaiKeng’s sea wind.
