Yang's Monument Gateway is the oldest memorial archway in Hsinchu City. It is dedicated to Yang Ju-niang, wife of Lin Chi, an early celebrity of the area. Yang lost her husband when she was only 24. After many attempts at her own life, she resolved to dedicate herself to her children. She died at 45. The gateway has four pillars, three gates and three stories and is entirely made of granite and diorite imported from Quanzhou. The carved inscriptions and patterns on the topmost tier have become weathered and hard to make out. Other decorative elements include carvings that depict flowers, Chinese mystical animals of lore, and stories glorifying loyalty and filial piety.
