Ms. An, an Indonesian Chinese, runs a home decor business on Belitung Island, Indonesia. Her work requires prolonged sitting and frequent heavy lifting. In 2019, she began experiencing progressive pain from her shoulders down to her thighs, with severe discomfort in her lower back and outer thighs that significantly impacted her daily life and work. This prompted her to seek medical treatment.o:p>/o:p> Ms. An’s journey for treatment was arduous. After initial visits to hospitals in Jakarta, she sought care in Malaysia and Singapore, undergoing supportive therapies and nerve block procedures. Unfortunately, these provided only temporary relief. Her symptoms recurred, and she developed muscle stiffness in her buttocks. On a friend’s recommendation, she visited a medical center in Taiwan, where she was diagnosed with an L5/S1 herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD). In January 2023, she underwent discectomy surgery but experienced a relapse three months later, with intensified pain unresponsive to medication.o:p>/o:p> In July 2023, following her cousin’s suggestion, Ms. An consulted Dr. Chiou Hao Hsu at the NTUH Hsin-Chu Branch Neurosurgery Clinic. Under the guidance of Dr. Hsu and with assistance from the Center for International Health, her treatment plan was meticulously arranged, including the application for a medical visa and coordination of care with the medical team. In August 2023, Ms. An was admitted to the hospital for a comprehensive MRI and subsequently underwent minimally invasive TLIF at the L5/S1 level. Dr. Hsu carefully explained the results, potential complications, and surgical details. The procedure was completed successfully, utilizing a PEEK cage, bone grafts, and percutaneous pedicle screws for posterior fixation.o:p>/o:p> Post-surgery, Ms. An received exceptional care from the neurosurgery ward staff, including education on wearing a back brace, gradual mobilization with the guidance of physical therapists, and activity recommendations for recovery. Four days after the operation, she was discharged and remained in Taiwan for two weeks for follow-up and suture removal.o:p>/o:p> After returning to Indonesia, Ms. An adhered to regular follow-up visits in Taiwan and gradually resumed normal activities. By August 2024, a year after surgery, she reported significant recovery, even flying to Japan for skiing and playing badminton to maintain her health. She expressed immense appreciation for Dr. Hsu’s detailed explanations, professional care, and patient-centered approach, which reassured her throughout the treatment process.
