Liver Transplantation

With a five-year survival rate of as high as 82% for liver transplant patients in Taiwan, our liver transplant technology is superior to that of the United States, Europe, and Japan thereby taking a leading position in the world.

Widely famous for its liver transplantation technology, medical institutions in Taiwan have attracted overseas physician from near and far. As of today, hundreds of liver-transplantation surgeons from all over the world have received specialty training in Taiwan. Among them, more than half of the Singaporean liver transplantation physicians are trained in Taiwan.

In addition to the liver transplantation with the best performance in the world, medical teams in Taiwan also have rich experience in heart, lung, kidney, hematopoietic stem cell, and corneal transplantation to provide the patients with the most complete medical services.

The event brought together multidisciplinary medical teams from Gynecology, Urology, ENT, Thoracic Surgery, Transplantation, and General Surgery, along with patients who had successfully undergone Da Vinci SP (Single Port) robotic surgeries. They shared their recovery experiences, allowing the public to witness how advanced medical technology is transforming lives. During the event,Dr. Yen-Chuan Ou, Dean of the Research and Innovation Center, demonstrated the latestDa Vinci SP robotic surgical system, providing attendees with a close-up view of its cutting-edge precision. Dr. Ou also announced the establishment of theInternational Education and Observation Center for Single-Port Robotic Surgery, which will serve as a global platform for clinical education and surgical observation. Through professional training for domestic and international surgeons and cross-border knowledge exchange, Tungs’ aims to position Taiwan as an international training hub for single-port minimally invasive surgery—bringing renewed hope and high-quality care to patients worldwide. Since then, the Urology, Gynecology, ENT, General Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery departments have successfully completed130 SP procedures by August 31, marking a major clinical achievement. This innovative single-incision approach minimizes pain, speeds up recovery, and improves post-operative quality of life. Future applications will expand into Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, and Pediatric Surgery—forming a multidisciplinary platform for integrated robotic single-port techniques. After undergoing Da Vinci SP robotic prostatectomy, he was able to eat and shower the next day, discharged on day three, and showed no need for suture removal. Now fully recovered, he even performed saxophone music at the press event, demonstrating his vitality. 67-year-old Mr. Linwas diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the right soft palate and a uvular tumor.Vice Superintendent Dr. Ching-Shao Tsaiperformed transoral Da Vinci SP robotic surgery to precisely remove both lesions, preserving oral function and ensuring a rapid recovery. 34-year-old Ms. Fansuffered from heavy menstruation and urinary frequency caused by a uterine fibroid compressing her bladder.Dr. Chin-Cheng Liu, Director of Gynecology, performed SP robotic myomectomy via a single small incision, completely removing the fibroid while preserving uterine integrity—allowing the patient to retain fertility potential. 35-year-old Ms. Pengexperienced chronic lower abdominal pain.Dr. Chun-Cheng Hsu, Director of Gynecologic Endoscopy, diagnosed bilateral ovarian endometriomas and pelvic endometriosis. She underwent natural orifice SP robotic excision surgery with no visible abdominal scars and rapid recovery—marking a true “new beginning” for her health. 70-year-old Mr. Hsiehpresented with painless hematuria and urinary obstruction, diagnosed as right renal pelvic carcinoma. Considering prior esophageal surgery and the risk of adhesions,Dr. Wei-Chun Weng, Director of Urologic Endoscopy, performed an extraperitoneal SP robotic nephroureterectomy. The tumor was completely removed with only one small incision, and the patient walked the next day and was discharged on day three. 22-year-old Ms. Chenwas found to have right thyroid nodules causing neck compression and breathing difficulty.Dr. Chi-Kun Yu, Director of General Surgery, performed a scarless transaxillary SP robotic thyroidectomy. Under 3D magnified vision, nerves and parathyroid glands were precisely identified and preserved. The patient was discharged on postoperative day three with excellent recovery. These cases embody the key advantages of single-port robotic surgery—smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery, and improved quality of life. Completing130 SP robotic surgeries in just over three monthsdemonstrates not only the hospital’s strong surgical capabilities but also Taiwan’s pioneering spirit in medical innovation and its alignment with global standards. Tungs’ Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital will continue its mission to become“the most trusted hospital among global citizens,”providing world-class surgical treatments and renewed hope for patients around the world. figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large" style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px auto; border: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; clear: both; text-align: center; display: table; width: 775.762px; position: relative; min-width: unset !important;">figcaption class="wp-element-caption" style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0.5em; caption-side: bottom; display: table-caption;">Tungs’ Hospital is the first hospital to introduce Da Vinci SP in Taiwan/figcaption>/figure> Follow us on Social Media FORMOSA TUNGS+ IMedS is on various social media platforms Updating the newest medical insights and stories!
