Zhongcheng Gate is a half-circle gateway built in the ancient style, with a sculpture of an armed soldier on top looking very much like a brave defender of the pass. This was once the entrance to Dongyin Island, but that function was lost with the completion of Zhongzhu Harbor. Pass through the gate and up the steps, and you come to the once-prosperous Central Road district with its well-preserved Eastern Fujian-style houses, rustic but strong structures built mainly of granite. Climb to the top of the gate, and the spot beside the sculpted soldier is a fine place for viewing Zhongzhu Harbor.
