Walking into Kinmen City, one finds himself traveling through a dragon-coiled structure in a city of thousand houses and involved in the fragrance of liquor from Kinmen Liquor Factory.During the Hung-wu reign of the Ming dynasty (1387), Marquis Zhou De-xing built one thousand houses in Kinmen City. Based on a good geomancy of dragon veins, the islands guard the entrance of the Quan-Zhang area in a defensive position as solid as gold, thus called "Kinmen or Golden Gate."The temples in Kinmen city are famous for their history and quantity. In history, most of them were built during the Ming dynasty. In quantity, the number of temples at the peak time was eighteen. Nowadays nine of them have survived. The ancient City God Temple is famous islandwide. A saying goes that the ancient city is effective in protection of its citizens and the city god is brilliant in the judgement of good and evil. On the 17th day of the fifth lunar month is the birthday of city God to be observed in Kinmen City as an annual event.In 1953, Commander-in-Chief Hu Lian chose Kinmen City as the site to build the Gaoliang Liquor Factory, encouraging people to exchange one catty of sorghum with one catty of rice.
