Golden Gate: As local saying goes: "In Golden Gate are Temples, in Cyonglin are Ancestral Abodes". When you walk through the Golden Gate, you are setting foot within the Dapeng ancient town where the aroma of Kinmen Distillery wafts through the air. In 1387 (Hongwu Period of the Ming Dynasty), a Marquis named Chou Te-hsing built the Dapeng ancient town on Kinmen facing the sea with the mountains at its back. The fortified town would guard the routes to Quanzhou and Zhangzhou. Due to the inscription "a strongly fortified city, a great town acting as the ocean's gate" over the front gate, it became known as "Kinmen" (literally "Golden Gate"). Golden Gate is renowned for the great antiquity and number of temples. The oldest were mainly built during the Ming Dynasty and at their peak there were eighteen temples, though nine survive today. The Gudi Town God Temple is renowned throughout the county for "watching over the people and telling good from evil". According to the Lunar Calendar, May 17 is the birthday of the Gudi Town God and a major annual festival for Kinmen. In 1953, garrison commander Hu Lien chose the Golden Gate as the location for the Kinmen Distillery brewery. Commander Hu encouraged the public to contribute an "equal measure of Kaoliang and brown rice" and set up the brewery to expand private brewing into a public enterprise. General Chao Chia-Hsiang wrote: "The love of Kinmen liquor drove us to seek a precious spring; though our homeland is occupied by the enemy, this land still belongs to our people."
