It might seem surprising that the oldest street on the island is in this village of Jinmencheng, located between Shuitou Village and Jincheng. It's because when Kinmen was first settled, Jinmencheng was its political and economic headquarters. In the early 1600s, this narrow street was a bustling marketplace, referred to as "Grocery Street" by locals at the time.Originally, the small houses led to a fortified gate in both directions. Now, just the North Gate remains. The street gradually went into decline after Kinmen's political and economic center was moved to Houpu (the old part of Jincheng) during the Qing Dynasty.Find out about life back when the street was in its heyday. Exhibits inside three houses include information and displays about religious beliefs, agricultural practices and everyday life.
