The entire islet is a hanging cliff, and the only landing area on the islet is the small bay in the northwest corner on the west bank. As the coast is filled with rock reefs and there are strong north and northwest winds, it is difficult for ships to approach. According to literature, Mianhua Islet is called Kangjiao Islet, and also Jhongdao (Midway Islet). The English name for Crag means rock cliff. It is called Mianhua Islet (cotton islet) because when migrating birds gathering here in summer and autumn and fly over the islet, it looks like flying cotton. There is a 25km–tall rock reef in the eastern waters of the islet. As it is erected in the middle of the sea like a big screen, it is called Pingfong Rock (screen rock).
