Relics Museum of Shizi Township is located in Feng-Lin Village in Shizi Township of Pingtung County. The walls and the roof s simulate those of the slate house. On the walls there are totems, like paintings or carvings of Hundred-Pace snakes, headmen’s portraits, and earthenware pots. The architectural design and the carvings are works by Mr. Isiiang Li, Unde Ciie, and ChZhou Iu. They are respectively, the chairman of the council of Shizi Township, an artist from Mudan Township, and a sculptor from Majia Township. The appearance of the museum is full of Pai-Uan flavor. It is the first museum in Shizi Township. Pai-Uan tribe had a hierarchical social system. Only the nobility have the privilege of decorating the pillars and purlins with carvings or sculptures. The most popular motifs are those symbolic of snakes, people, combination of the two, boars, deer, etc. the works are in static postures, facing forwards, and symmetrical. They are often two dimensional. The woodworks are free style and primitive. As for the colors, usually they are in red, black, or yellow. The museum has all kind of artworks by Pai-Uan artists. The beech wood carving older than one hundred years, “Hundred-Year-old Carving of Chasing-Hunting-Gaming Tribe”, is especially valuable. It is a heavy door with a facade of portraits. Once it was misused for covering a well in Fan-Liao Township. Now, through the effort of Shizi Township government and Fangliao Association for Promotion of Culture Reservation, it has become the number one treasure of the museum.
