At the north end of Kaohsiung's International Airport there are some large stretches of farmland. This is the Gueilin Village area. As result of aviation safety stipulations, extensive development is prohibited in this area. The area had originally been a favorite with residents on their early morning and evening strolls. It now attracts plane watchers and street vendors. The result was a great inconvenience for residents and aviation authorities. The city took into consideration the need for a recreation space and negotiated a settlement whereby the farmers switched to operating recreation farms. This would offer a comfortable and relaxing environment, without affecting aviation safety. Over a hundred flights land and take off from Kaohsiung International Airport each day. The public can now order drinks and watch planes as they thunder past. Photos:
