Huang Family Youtang Garden, Shueitou: The "Youtang" in Shueitou was built by the shipping magnate Huang Chun (1702~1783) who was said to have owned eighteen sailing ships. Construction took place in 1765 and at the time was used as the family school"Youtang" was once the only estate to have an ornamental garden in all of Kinmen. There is a pond in front of the main building crossed by a winding bridge of stone slabs. The bridge divided the oval-shaped pond into the Sun and Moon ponds. The entire complex had eight front rooms and two back rooms. The layout includes a front hall, back hall, flower hall, as well as a long wing chamber on the left with Sun-Moon windows inside.Classes were held in the front hall while the back hall was where the tutor lived. A pagoda with side-blinds was placed in the middle to connect the two halls. To the left of the back hall was a "Flower Hall" with wooden partitions. A hidden latch allowed the wooden partition to be opened and closed. This space was used for drinking tea and admiring the flowers. The wing chambers' courtyard has a well in the middle that is only 3.3m deep. It is paved with stone stabs then four columns set at the corners. Another four stone slabs were then fitted as a railing. When you look into the well, the masonry forms the character "Jin" ("Well"). This well railing design is not only unique in Kinmen but also rarely seen in other areas as well. The gateway plaque for "Youtang" was made from Quanzhou white stone and the inscription was made by Chen Ping-heng in June, 1766.
