Phone:886-5-2593900 Address:18 of Taiwans Alishan Highway
Chashan is located at the beginning of the Cenwun River, the very south top of the Alishan Township.“Chashan” is called “Jiayama” in Tsou language. It means “plain on the mountain waist”. It is the largest area among the 9 parts of Alishan Township. The mountain reserved land is very broad and the weather here is comfortable and nice. There are about 400 citizens in Chashan Tribe most of them moved here after the Japanese Era, so it is a very young tribe. The tribe happens to be on an intersection of three roads leading to the major gathering places of every tribe, including Dapu of the Bunong Tribe, Shanmei of Han people, and Shanmin Township of Tsou Tribe in Kaohsiung. Sixty percent of the people here are Tsou Tribe, thirty percent of them are Han people, and only about 10 percent of them are Bunong Tribe. The biggest feature of the Chashan Tribe is its famous pavilion culture. In the village there are all kinds of pavilions, and almost all of them are made of thatch, bamboo and wood. The top of a pavilion is an important indicator to identify Jiayama Tribe: pavilion tops of the Bunong Tribe are flat, and Tsou Tribe round. Simple wooden sculptures can be seen at the entrance of every pavilion. Observing those sculptures is a good way for outsiders to know about the aboriginal people’s culture. Pavilion culture is important for people to interact inside Chashan Tribe. Some would even hang fruits they picked underneath the pavilion to share with everyone. Even visitors on the outside can take fruits by themselves. Summer is a busy agriculture season for the Chashan Tribe. They often plant seeds in February, March and April. April and May are the best time to catch fish in the river. May and June are raining season, so they go hunting until August. Winter is the leisure time for farmers. They usually get together at night by the fire and tell stories. Chashan Tribe likes to share. Their hospitability and kindness to visitors on the outside are impressiveall the time
