At 298m above sea level, Bishan may be the highest point anywhere in Matsu, but it is also a reasonable climb for the novice hiker. Pillboxes cover the protrusion, and the summit was the command center from which Beigan's defense was directed. With the defenses on Nangan, this key bastion served to defend the entire archipelago. Because military headquar ters are on the mountaintop, entry and photography are restricted.Three trails cross Bishan. To the south is one of a thousand steps leading down to Tangqi Village and up to the hilltop. While the trail gets steep up towards the peak, the climb is worth it both for the rush of completing such a difficult task and for the view. Another path leads to Qinbi and splits into two trails, where a chorus of birds and insects provides the melody for the cinescape of the Chinese mainland that can be had from the peak.
