This is a classic example of a small coastal fishing village, and its Yanggong Bashih Temple is a fine example of traditional religious practice-especial at festival times. In times of stormy weather, the harbor here is packed with boats escaping from the rough seas. Receding waters at low tide leave a bare expanse of beach four or five hectares in area, inviting children to come and play. A bridge now connects Houao with Tangci, where in olden days people moving between the two villages when the tide was up had to wade through water.
