Koji Pottery combines techniques of shaping clays, glazing, and glost firing, being one of the most valuable and prestigious Taiwanese traditional arts. Koji pottery is often use as a decoration in buildings and temples due to its multiple shapes, various colors and the pleasant atmosphere it give out. Chiayi is where Taiwanese Koji pottery originates thus, Japanese as once called such pottery as “Chiayi Pottery”. Mr. Shiao Wu-Long was born in Chiayi city in 1948. Enlightened by and having learned from miniature sculpture master Lou Yong-Yu since 1980, Mr. Shiao started to learn Koji pottery, a art that once almost disappeared. He established his own Koji pottery workshop in 1993. He was also one of few miniature sculptors in Taiwan. His pieces of art have won both awards in the 47th National Art Fair Craft Division and 3rd prize in the 4th Folk Craft Competition Sculpture Division. Now Mr. Shiao’s projects are recognized and loved by experts from both Taiwan and all over the world.
