Three Mountains King Temple (Hakka culture)

Situated in Jiouming Village of Jiuru Township, Three Mountains King Temple was established in 1651 (5th year of Yongli in Ming Dynasty) with over 300-year history. It is a rare ancient Hakka temple which still preserved its traditional architectural layout without undergoing renovations or expansions and is currently verified as 3rd Category Historical Site by the Taiwanese government.”Three Mountains” originally refers to 3 well-known mountains in Mainland China: Dushan, Mingshan and Jingshan. In respect to the gods, residents dwelling in these three mountains worshipped the gods of the mountain, thus giving rise to the Three Mountain Kings. According to folktale documentations, the earliest Three Mountains King legend began during the Tsui Dynasty where the Three Mountains Kings claimed themselves as brothers sent from the Heavens to guard Dushan, Mingshan and Jingshan; another legend has it that because 3 mountain gods assisted in establishing the Song Dynasty, thus they were canonized as “Three Kings”. Although the legends are no longer verifiable, they have indeed coagulated and rooted the local Hakka belief in the Three Mountains Kings.From its appearance, the roof of the Three Mountains King Temple is of a swallow-tail shaped roof divided into 3 sections with a streamline look when observed from a distance; building space is divided into 3 basilicas and 2 wings with decorative flower, bird, deity and beast-shaped koji ceramic arts, wooden pillars and columns and stone walls as main architectural embellishment; side-room served as interconnection between the basilicas with a front gateway and a central gateway; horizontal tablets with “Light to light up all of Eastern seas” (Hui-Guang-Nan-Hai) and “Might to Overwhelm Eastern seas” (Wei-Zhen-Dong-Hai) inscribed along with shrines, incense burner and lots container (qiantung) are also precious historical artifacts.The ”Home-Coming of the Wives of the Three Mountains King Festival’ is a festive religious even
