Haikou Port is located in Haikou Village of Checheng Township, Pingtung County, and is the borderline between the mountainous terrains, plains and the ocean. Originally a small port, Haikou Port became known to people due to the famous “Haikou Sand Dunes” located nearby. After port planning, Haikou Port became one of the major ports for the “Blue Highway” which connects Pingtung County, Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County. In the future, Haikou Port will work towards in becoming the transportation transfer center for sea leisure activities.Vessels may sail smoothly in the calm waters surrounding the Port. Located beside the Provincial Highway, the Port was chosen as the terminal station of the Blue Highway due to its easy access. Haikou Port is equipped with an information center to provide visitors travel information on Hengchun peninsula. The well-planned facilities surrounding the Port include a waiting room, recreational plaza, tents and a forest of coconut trees. In addition, a round-the-coast bike trail is also available for cyclists to enjoy the romantic seascapes.Haikou Sand Dunes is commonly known as “Salun” or “sand hills” created by the strong northeast monsoon winds. It was also called the “Little Sahara Desert” because of its infinite stretch of desert landscapes with the appearance of sand dunes vary from season to season. Sometimes the hills will pile up like a mountain and sometimes flat and low like the beach. Regrettably, the size of the sand dunes is no longer as magnificent as before due to gravel exploitation.Although the landscape of Haikou Sand Dune is destroyed, the nearby beach is, however, an ideal spot for sand and water plays. During ebb time, visitors may enjoy a leisure and relaxed stroll on the beach or build sand sculptures or castles, or play in the water or go seashell picking; for those trying to get away from the sun, a forest of beef woods is located nearby the beach to offer a cool resting place.
