Originally established in 1956 as the ""Zhongxing Distillery,"" the Matsu Distilleryswitched to its current name in 1969. Spirits made here—such as Daqu, Kaoliang, and Laojiu—make popular souvenirs and are renowned for the rich, mellow flavor imbued by the company's t radi t ional brewing techniques. Matsu Laojiu (or ""Yellow Liquor"") has an appealing aroma, smooth taste, and warms the throat without being drying. Originally used for militar y purposes, Tunnel 88 is now used as a storage space for the Matsu Distillery. The tunnel is open to the public on weekend afternoons. At other times, visitors are required to arrange viewings in advance so that the temperature and humidity of the tunnel can be maintained.
