As the Tai-Ma ferry slowly approaches Nangan, you can clearly see a large wall, rising on Fuqing Ridge and bearing this inscription: Sleeping on Spears, Awaiting the Dawn. This is the wall of a square, narrow building that stands four stories tall in a park on the mountain to the southwest of Fuao Village. The four characters of the inscription were written by the late President Chiang Kai-shek during a visit in July 1958 to remind soldiers and civilians alike to remember the mission of recapturing China. This is a landmark that denoted the military gateway to the Matsu islands. From the park, you have a fine overall view of Fuao Harbor below a view that presents a different aspect every day.
