※Closed for renovation The military dug this tunnel at Beihai during the cold-war period to serve as an underground wharf and fill other needs of military preparedness. Started in 1968 and finished in 1970, it is 193 meters long, 10 meters wide, and 12 meters high. Except for a bit of dynamite, it was dug through the granite entirely by hand with picks, hand spikes, and shovels. It is truly a marvel of construction, and a number of soldiers paid with their lives when dynamite was used improperly. The military released the tunnel in February of 2001; it was then renovated by the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration, which also erected a statue of eight workers at the end of the tunnel to remind us of the difficult and arduous work that accomplished it. The tunnel was opened to the public in August of 2001. ● Please: Turn the lights on as you enter the tunnel and turn them off as you leave. Help conserve energy!
