The establishment of Hang-Qi Memorial Hall originated from Crown Prince Hirohito's (later to become the Emperor Showa) visit to Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). In order to commemorate the royal visit, a local gentry initiated the construction of the hall in 1926 by raising funds from the community and government. “Hang-Qi” - literally translated from Japanese, Gyoukei - refers to a visit or attendance paid by the crown prince or empress. Nowadays, this hall serves as a public venue for activities and events.
