Danayi Valley got its name from a direct translation from Tsou language. It is one of the rarely clean rivers in Taiwan. It is located at the upstream of the Zengwun River with an elevation of about 500 meters above sea level. The river is 18 kilometers long and very beautiful, and the climate is very nice. In fact, Danayi Valley was not in a good condition more than 10 years ago. People arbitrarily caught fish and shrimps here and polluted the water. Eventually, the Tsou people in Shanmei Village couldn’t stand it any more, so they decided to protect the important water resources of their tribe life vein. Thus, Danayi Valley was taken good care of for more than 10 years. During then, even though the Herb typhoon attached, rivers were twisted, and trees and giant stones collapsed, Shanmei Tsou people all worked together to remove stream stones to restore the Danayi Valley. So far we finally can see through the button of these clear rivers. The“Danayi Valley Natural Ecological Park” is the first park ran by people rather than the government in Taiwan. It is supervised by the Shanmei Community Development Association and open to the public, and it charges only a small fee for cleaning and maintenance. These years Danayi Valley has become a new landscape in Alishan. They even perform dancing and singing at the entrance of the park. Danayi Valley not only has a rich natural ecology, long-creeping green mountains, warm quiet trails, shining rivers and streams in the valley, outstanding giant stones in the water, and dancing birds and butterflies on both shores, but also has lots of fish here, such as the numerous bitter flower fish. On the other hand, to balance the ecology, the Zengwun River in Danayi Valley is open for people to fish in raining seasons and when the fish are breeding.
