This railroad was built to transport sugarcane for the sugar industry between Chiayi and Beigang back in the Japanese Colonial Period. Later, it undertook the responsibility to transport produce and daily goods. With increasing visitors to Beikang Chao-Tien Temple and Hsinkang Fong-Tien Temple, it became the golden route amongst the sugar railroads. It is also an important means of transportation for residents and students along the route. Of the old sugar railroad now only remains the section between Chungshan Road and Lane 111 Dengyung Road of Hsinkang Town. Today, a “Railroad Park” has been established to preserve the culture of the sugar industry railroad of bygone days.
