PingDong Local Art Museum is situated in Pingtung City's Tianliao Lane and a former Chiu Family ancient house "Chung-Shi-Di" built in 1896 by Chiu Yuan-Shou, son of Chiu Feng-Yang who was one of the main figures of the Liudui Hakka Resistance Force. Wealth accumulated by the success of Chiu Chiu-Shun, son of Chiu Yuan-Shou with "Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd." funded the reconstruction of Chung-Shi-Di which took 3 years to complete. In 1991, the Chiu's generously donated 2 ancient houses along with the land to Pingtung City's Chung Cheng Junior High School in compliance with the school's demand for campus expansion. One of the ancient houses was first tear down with the land used as sports field. When the School prepares to tear down Chung-Shi-Di in 1993, local government, academia and historical workers strived to preserve this ancient house. In 1995, Chung-Shi-Di was transformed into PingDong Local Art Museum and was announced latter as one of Pingtung County's historical buildings. The size of PingDong Local Art Museum totaled to roughly 220 ping with its façade shaped like "四". It is a traditional Hakka Quadrangle Courtyard House consisted of 2 halls and 2 wings with the courtyard as the epicenter of the building surrounded by corridor with entry to the front hall living room and rear main hall; the living room is the House's most glamorous and grandest place with its round arc horseback roof and clay sculptures. Screen door located at the center of the living room is decorated with sculptures sprayed with gold powder. Flower swags, sparrow braces and lion statues enriched the eaves gallery with both left and right corridor decorated with clay sculptures and paintings. The building's detailed decorations are symbols of the Chiu Family's extraordinary social status at the time.
