Paiwan has always been renowned for its carving skills. As it has a strict structure of social class, not only the nobles can own the sculptures but the majority of the sculptors are male who also hold a noble title. The sculptures of Paiwan tribe include a variety of works such as hair comb, spoon, ornament, door header, ritual knife for decoration and religious utensils where the unique carving skill can been seen in all carved works. Besides, the subject of creation mainly focuses on the hunting chart, ancestor images and fairy tale while the head and hundred-pace snake veins are the most popular creation of carving. To completely present the characteristics of Paiwan’s historical relics and allow more people to know Paiwan’s carving culture, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Pingtung County established the Paiwan Carving Gallery in 1995. This is a special collection hall that thoroughly introduces the development and history of Paiwan’s carving arts through pictures and words. In addition, the exhibition of real objects can help people to appreciate the beauty of Paiwan’s carving arts. The Paiwan Carving Gallery is divided into five major exhibition sections. The “Pictures and Words Exhibition Gallery” introduces the Paiwan’s social hierarchy and organization as well as the evolution of carvings; the “Ecological Exhibition Gallery” introduces the types and techniques of sculpture; the “Large-Scaled Sculpture Exhibition Gallery” displays the large-sized statues; the “Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition Gallery” shows the works of the contemporary Paiwan artists; the Theme Exhibition Gallery” demonstrates the daily commodities, religious utensils and hunting weapons. Based on the mysterious veins from the sculptures such as head, snake, sun and windmill veins, people can deeply understand the religion, belief and fairly tale of Paiwan tribe. Apart from the carved works, the Paiwan Carving Gallery also exhibits the colored glaze beads and clay arts. In particular
