The TzongLan Hsiao Family Historical Residence was built in accordance to traditional Canton building design in 1880 and has a history of over 130 years. Situated in Pingtung City’s Chonglan Village, the grandness of the Residence is an evidence to the Hsiao Family’s wealth, power and well-respected social status at the time. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong in Ching Dynasty, Hsiao Family ancestor Hsiao Wei-Tian crossed the Taiwan Strait and started his life in Taiwan as a farmer. Later he engaged himself in the sugar trade business which later prospered and transformed him into an incredible wealthy man with accumulating riches. With riches to rival the country, the fruitful Hsiao family often held various kinds of banquets in their effort to maintain family bonds. Today, one can get a feel of Hsiao family’s carefree life at the time with the slang, “Even without cooking for 3 days, the TzongLan Hsiao Family will not go hungry”. The Hsiao Family also contributed a great deal in advocating local academia. For example, upon the completion of Pingtung Tutorial Academy in 1815, the Hsiao Family funded and provided manpower needed for academic propaganda and enabled the Academy to operate; furthermore, members from the Hsiao Family took turns in teaching local residents Chinese at tutorial hall “Ke-Yu-Hsuan” situated right beside the Residence; after Taiwan was restored from Japanese occupation, the generous Hsiao Family also provided spaces for the Farmer’s Association to run schools free of charge in alleviating financial burdens brought by education enforced upon local children. The residence of the luxurious Hsiao Family also displayed majestic and grand features. Hsiao Family Historical Residence was built in accordance with traditional Canton architectural design which was characterized by bricks, tiles and woods as its building materials with master craftsmanship and great attention to decorative details such as wooden swags hanging above the eaves
