Donglong Temple was first built in 1706 (45th year during Emperor Kangxi’s reign in Ching Dynasty). However, gigantic and catastrophic waves rose by a tsunami in 1894 crushed the Temple to its core, and the Temple had to be relocated and rebuilt which eventually gave birth to today’s Donglong Temple. Donglong Temple is an extremely important center of Donggang faith. “Wang Ye Boat Ceremony” held once every 3 years is especially important to Donggang local residents. “Boat Burning Ritual” is the climax of this festive religious event, and has made Donggang’s Wang Ye Boat Ceremony Festival one of Taiwan’s most famous worship ceremony culture.Marshal Wen is the main deity of Donglong Temple. Named “Wen Hong”, Marshal Wen was born in 609 (5th year of Ta-Yeh during Emperor Yang in Sui Dynasty) during Tang Dynasty Emperor Chenguan’s reign. According to the legend, Marshal Wen saved Emperor Tang Taitsung during one of his disguised tours and was canonized by the Emperor as Presented Scholar along with 35 others. Later this band of 36 brave scholars became known for their punitive expeditions against the bandits and We Hong was again canonized as Marshal.During one of the regular sea expeditions, unexpected sea wreck took the lives of these 36 scholars. Although stricken with grief, Emperor Tang Taitsung believed that they had gone up to the Heavens to serve their post as deities. He then canonized them as “Gods to Guard the World” and commissioned a “King Wen Ship” with spirit tablets of Marshal Wen and his god-brothers placed inside the ship for the people to worship. A royal script was also placed inside the ship as an announcement to the Tang people in welcoming the arrival of the ship with a sincere and faithful heart.
