Dongkang is a town surrounded by ocean. As early as in Qing dynasty, the fisheries industry in Dongkang has been developed prosperously. According to the “Revised Gazetteer of Fongshan County”, “Dongkang is not only a massive deep-sea port but also near the Taiwan Strait. Since it can berth many large commercial ships, the merchantmen frequently come to this area for sea trading” was stated in a paragraph. Thus it can be known that Dongkang has been named as one of the largest seaports in Taiwan since Qing dynasty and become an important sea trade port due to its perfect geographical conditions. This has also made the foundation of Dongkang’s fisheries business. The old fisheries association building was reconstructed into Dongkang Fishery Culture Exhibition Hall which has a rich collection of humanities including the Dongkang’s fisheries history, religions and beliefs of local fishmen, fisheries culture of Dongkang village, fishing process and aquaculture development. What is more interesting? The exhibition hall also prepared a bluefin tuna fishing zone to allow the tourists to fish a model of 100 kg bluefin tuna and get the hard work of fishing experience. The exhibition hall is divided into two floors with different theme arrangements. The special exhibition area is located in the first floor to hold all kinds of theme exhibition on a non-regular basis. This area is also equipped with an audio room to screen the documentary film of “Three Treasures of Dongkang”. The regular exhibition section is located in the second floor to completely record the more-than-100-years history of Dongkang fisheries industry.
