Dapeng Bay was known by many names: “Piehsing Port”, “Chiehteng Port”, “Guandi Port”, “Nanping Port” and “Datan” all refer to Dapeng Bay. The Bay is situated at the border of Pingtung County’s Donggang Township and Linbian Township with its southwestern part neighboring Taiwan Strait overlooking the island of Liuqiu. Dapeng Bay is Taiwan’s largest inland bay which encompasses beautiful landscapes of wetlands, seashores and gulf with rich diversity of plants and animals as well as mangroves, lagoons, fish aquaculture ponds, beaches, sunset and other breathtaking natural sceneries. As Linbian River and Donggang River enters the sea with sands and soils collected along its way, sediment deposits accumulated at the outlet gradually formed a long spit due to tidal backwash and monsoon season winds. Isolated by the spit, the Bay was separated from the offshore at both sides, forming an one-of-a-kind choked lagoon. As quiet and serene as it seems, this 532 acre broad water is a habitat to many creatures.Wetland is Dapeng Bay’s most characteristic ecological scenery. In addition to earth preservation and flood prevention, plankton-rich wetland water also attracted various kinds of birds and crustaceans in making it their source of food and habitat as well as forming an ecological system typical of a mangrove. The wetland is the mother of these delicate creatures in that it nurtures and co-exists with them.Oyster culture can also be seen in Dapeng Bay. Reliance on marine resources seemed reasonable enough for those living in the fish village nearby coastal waters. Waters of Dapeng Bay is ideal for oyster growth and the once oyster culture pageantry can be traced by the presence of man-made Oyster Shell Island which is an accumulation of decades of oyster decladding. It is amazing that although this Island was made by accident, it still displays splendors in its craftsmanship.Dapeng Bay possesses comprehensive and well-planned leisure facilities.
