East Gate of Sin-Bei-Shi-Zhuang, located at Fong-Tian Village of Neipu Township, is also called “Hai-Zhong Gate”. It is listed as a third class national historical site. In the early half of Ciing Dynasty, Many Hakkas moved from Guang-Dong Province to settle in Pintung area. Those new comers often got into fights with Ho-Los and the aboriginals. To avoid invasions and define the boarder, they built 4 gates as fortifications in each direction: east, west, south, and north. However, as things developed in the past hundreds of years, only the east gate still exists now. For people living here, it becomes a symbol of their respect and memory about the ancestors. The gate is mainly built with stones and earth. The height is about 7 meters, the width about 6.5, and the thickness 1.2. The area is about 19 square meters; the brick wall on both side are mainly to support the weight of the gate. In the inside of the wall there are holes to hold the supports of the doors. The roof is covered with red tiles and the ridge is flat “horse back” style. To the right side in front of the gate is a granite stele in memory of the gate’s rebuilding at Guang-Siyu time of Ciing Dynasty. Though the words inscribed now are blurry, it is still a valuable relic. A tablet with 2 words “Huai-Zhong” is hung in the middle of the wall above the door, with a round gun hole on either side of it. Embedded in the tablet is a history. At Kang-Si time of Ciing Dynasty, an event called “I-Gui Zhu Incident” took place. The chaos badly interfered with people’s everyday life, so they organized as soldiers to protect their hometown. After the rebellion was pressed down, the government awarded these people for their contribution and honored the Hakkas as “Huai-Zhong” (staying loyal). That is why the gate is also called the “Huai-Zhong Gate”.
