The Old Feng-Tian Street at Neipu

Phone:886-8-7792001 Address:912 Xinzhong Rd., Neipu Township, Pingtung County
Old Feng-Tian Street is today’s Sin-Zhong Road of Neipu Township. Once it was the main street of Feng-Tian Village. The old village first came into being in 18th century and gradually became a ghetto for long term residence. Along the street many tall buildings in Baroque style stand one by one. Villages rarely had a long street, but Feng-Tian Street is one of the special phenomena. Nowadays, about 79% of the old houses are still in good shape. It is designated as a bicycling zone by Liudui Hakka Culstural Park. Installation art is introduced to this resort so as to add to the artful atmosphere. The street with many old style temples and townhouses is a nostalgic resort. On both sides are many stores built in Japan ruling period. These buildings incorporate architectural elements like Taiwan red bricks, Baroque style, and Japanese modernism of Siioua Time. For example, Pusing Grocery, Songrong Hardware, Meiia Beauty Saloon, Rongsheng Kimono Shop, and Feng-Tian Office of Neipu Farmers’ Association all have stucco washing finish, which is popular in Siioua time. The sharp contrast between these stores and the “evening market” is a very special local phenomenon. Kun-Sie-Cheng Grocery, still in business, was built about from 1920 to 1924. It is built with red bricks, but the wall around the roof and the top are decorated in Baroque style. The ornaments are in various forms. Of them, the relief pattern are especially fine art. Feng-Yong-Siiang Grocery, built in 1924, has the traditional bay structure and façade decoration of Baroque style. The eagle motif on the side wall, the wide wall around the roof, the belts between walls of different floors, the keystones, the post columns, and the carvings on the round arch windows are all striking beauty of architecture.
