On HengChun Peninsula, there is a place without any grass growing around and only covered by mud-colored sand. However, there are orange flames springing up from the ground. When wind blows, they are sometimes ablaze, sometimes inflamed and move all around like a fire dance performance. In day time, these small flames are not possibly brighter than sunshine. Therefore, it doesn’t seem special at all. But when the night is dark, it’s their show time. This is “Fire from the earth”, a very interesting scene.“Fire from the earth” is located in 5 kilometers outside Hengchun downtown. The geology is KenTing argillite. There are so many natural cracks in argillite that natural gas follows the cracks and springs up from the ground. After ignited, it becomes flames. The most interesting thing is that natural gas randomly springs up from every crack. Therefore, the flames seem like walking around on feet. However, in early days, “Fire from the earth” didn’t occur in the current place. The location has been moved to the current place after gas drilling because CPC Corporation, Taiwan had gas exploration.Spring and winter are dry seasons of Hengchun Peninsula. Since there is no much rain, the cracks in argillite are not easily clogged. Phenomenon of flames springing up from the ground is greater. On the contrary, summer and autumn are rain seasons. Sands clog the cracks because of muddiness and it decreases the opportunities of flames appearing. Phenomenon of flames springing up from the ground becomes little. However, it is a very special phenomenon in Pingtung. Therefore, in 1996, “Fire from the earth” has been planned with facilities including instruction boards, trails and parking lot. There are many tourists coming for the fame of the night view in “Fire from the earth”.
