Hengchun’s ballad is a music that spreads among the common people. It is also a culture that describes life experiences, historic background and local features by sounds and voices. In order to let the intangible cultural property to be passed on, Pingtung County Government has rebuilt the old dormitory aside Hengchun Hospital as Hengchun Folk Museum that exhibits the scores and instruments of “Recalling the Past”, “Spring All the Year Round”, “Melody of Protecting the Cattle”, “Melody of Pingpu”, “Melody of Five Holes”, “Ditty of Fenggang” and “Cow’s companion”, expecting to preserve the root of developing Hengchun’s ballads.The beginning of Hengchun ballads is an accident. There were a group of non-natives coming to Hengchun for reclaiming. Because of missing their families, they casually hummed some songs. Those songs may be fragments of the melodies they heard at hometown or a casually composed melody. Since those songs are nice and easy to be remembered and sung, they were gradually spread among Hengchun, Manjhou, Fenggang and Checheng. Because those songs particularly have local features, they are knows as Hengchun ballads.From music research, features of melody, origins and area are always used to divide the categories. The 7 songs exhibited in Hengchun Folk Museum are actually the traditional ballads in Hengchun area. Among them, although “Melody of Protecting the Cattle” was only spread in Manjhou, since Manjhou city belonged to Hengchun when Qing Dynasty and Taiwan under Japanese Rule, it was included in Hengchun ballads. After restoration, Hengchun and Manjhou were divided into 2 districts and it is renamed as Manjhou ballad.“Recalling the Past” is the earliest ballad that was spread by word of mouth and its singing is more casual. Singers even can fill different lyrics according to preference is its special and lovely characters.“Spring All the Year Round” means that four seasons are all like spring on words.
