Liu-ma Gou was named as Eel Ditch in the old time because of the legend that marbeled eels grew in the stream in the past. As there was also some prisons nearby and "eel" is pronounced the same as "jerk" in Taiwanese， this stream was named as "jerk stream"， from which it was transformed into Liu-ma Gou and the name was passed down through generations.
