Hsuan Chuang University is a higher education institute founded from funds raised by Buddhism disciples. The University was founded on March 25， 1997. At that time， its enrolment system was based on the joint entrance examinations all over Taiwan. The University is also one of the universities which have been created in recent years in Taiwan. The reason why the Buddhist community hopes to set up its own university (establishing a Buddhist university has been a common wish of Buddhists) is as follows. In Buddhism， wisdom is an objective and knowledge is what human beings' existence and development depends on and the source of human beings' search for a brighter future. Essentially， Buddhism is the religion that looks highly on knowledge and vision. Therefore， the purpose of establishing a higher-education institute was to search for knowledge and break up wuming (foolishness and ignorance). Buddhism's "brightening the heart and understanding real nature in order to get rid of confusion and find enlightenment" is the nature of Buddhist teaching. The idea of setting up the university arose in 1965; and the "Hsuan Chuang Cultural Education Foundation" was established in 1987. Since then， the building of the university has proceeded. In 1997， it obtained permission to start enrolling students. The university is named after Monk Hsuan Chuang.
