Mangrove forests are types of plants which grow up in the saline coastal sediment habitats at the juncture between rivers and seas. The four species currently existing in Tainan are Kandelia, Limnitzera Racemosa, Avicennia Marina, and Rhizophora Stylosa. Tainan coastal areas, beginning north from the estuary of Bazhang River to the estuary of Zengwen River on the south, where lagoons and swamps are many and waves are minder are good for Mangrove forests to breed. Avicennia Marina and Kandelia prominently dwell in the swamps at the estuary of Jishui River in Beimen District as well as at the estuary of Jiangjun River in Jiangjun District. Also Avicennia Marina and Limnitzera Racemosa spread enormously up to 5 hectares in Hailiao Harbor and in the fish hatcheries, swamps at the estuary of Zengwen River in Qigu District. Mangrove forests are abundant with minerals and organics which provide mudskippers and fiddler crabs with a heavenly living environment. Every year, Tainan Government continues the artificial propagation for Mangrove forests, a national treasure, in the hope of creating the perfectly natural ecosystems in its coastal areas.
