It became known comparable to Alishan for the massive number of sacred Taiwan red cypress trees found in 1973 by professors of Chinese Culture University. Since then, it has been a popular tourist attraction.In 1986, the government officially listed Daguanshan as “Lalashan Nature Reserve” which encompasses Shangbaling mountain area of the Northern-Cross. The reserve is home to towering red cypresses, yellow cedars as well as Acer serrulatums and beeches that turn from green to red in autumn.For visitors to more easily explore the reserve, the Forestry Bureau has built scenic trails leading to giant red cypresses that are 500 to 3,000 years old. Among all, tree no.5 is the oldest sacred tree that dates 2,800 years.
