The Hai Shan Fishing Port located in Hsiangshan District, faces the Taiwan Strait, and is 11.5 km from the Hsinchu Fishing Port in the north and 8 km from the Downtown of Hsinchu City in the northeast. The Port is classified as a shoal. The fishermen here mostly make a living from inshore fishing and shallow sea culture. Before the reconstruction of the Port, the fishermen's rubber boats were usually docked on the beach. However, whenever typhoons or bigger winds and waves came, the rubber boats were swept away or blown onto the roads, and thus destroyed. This situation has affected the fishery production and the fishermen's properties and lives. Therefore, in 1988, the municipal government started building the Hai Shan Chuan Ao, a tide-breaker, to provide a place for fishing boats to park during the period of monsoons. The fishes here are mainly blackfish, bream, cuttlefish and shark. There is no fish market at the Port and the fish need to be shipped out for auction.
