The Fongtian temple is related to Singang history. In the early Ching Dynasty, Singang was an important harbor. Inhabitants here believe in Ma Zu, a Goddess protects all sailings from harm. The first Ma Zu temple, Tianho temple (Tianhogong), was established in 1700. Its Ma Zu statue is also called “Goddess by boat”. According to a folk-tale, this statue was placed on board from mainland China. When the boat sailed by Singang, Ma Zu instructed to stay nearby, and the inhabitants built temple for the Goddess. With the flooding coast, depositing harbor and increasing fights among immigrants, the inhabitants moved to new area, New Nangang Street. In this period, the Tianho temple was destroyed by flood in 1799, then rebuilt in location nowadays, and named “Fongtiangong” (Fongtian temple). Earthquakes in 1840 and 1905 caused great damage to Fongtian temple, especially the later. In 1912, the master, Haitong Wu, instructed the restoration of main hall, front door and the wings. In 1961’s construction, the front hall was repaired, and several new hall and buildings were established.
