“Qian” means “next to” or “nearby”. Because the forerunners built homes around the big ponds in the village, this area was called “Tanzaiqian” (in Taiwanese). That is the Tan Qian Village today. The ponds here were once support the livelihood of Tanqian. There are around 1200 people living in Tanqian Village now. Few decades ago, there were 17 brick kilns because the sludge in these ponds was very suitable for making red bricks and tiles. The kiln industry facilitated the development of the village. However, August 7 Flood in 1958 destroyed the entire village and caused serious causalities and losses. Dozens of brick kilns were closed one by one over ten years after the new brick machine were imported. When we walk into the kiln, the bricks, which were made decades ago, are still compiled up orderly and waited for burning. The moment in the kilns seems freeze. Nowadays, no heat will come out of the kilns anymore. All the glory has gone with the breeze and the breeze of Spring will bring in new hope again.
