As the Taiwan-Matsu ferry enters Fu'ao Port, one of the first things to meet the eye is a huge inscription carved onto a large screen wall on Fuqing Ridge. Translating into ""Always On The Alert,"" the nscription is a famous local landmark. The rectangular wall stands in front of a seven-story memorial building, now used as an exhibition space for artists at the suggestion of local artist Cao Kaizhi. The phrase was originally penned by Chiang Kai-shek during a July 1958 visit to remind residents to be prepared to reconquer the Chinese mainland.
