Checheng is the terminal station of the Jiji Branch Line and a mountain village that has power plants as its neighbors. Along the Jhuoshuei River are the Minghu Pumped-Storage Power Plants (Daguan No. 1 and Daguan No. 2), the Mingtan Pumped-Storage Power Plant, the Shueili Power Plant, and the Jyugong Power Plant. This is a concentration of power plants that one rarely sees anywhere else in the world, and it makes Checheng inseparable from the generation of electric power. The village also has a glorious logging-industry history. The construction of the Jiji Branch Line and various power plants during the Japanese occupation period brought large numbers of workers and business opportunities to Checheng, but when the work was finished the village declined. Checheng began to prosper again when the Jhenchang logging company set up a mill there; this brought so much business, in fact, that the area of Checheng and Shueili became known as "Little Taipei." One cannot talk about the Jhenchang logging company without talking about its founder, Sun Hai. In 1959 he won the bid to exploit the timber in the Danda Forest District of the Central Mountain Range, and he started building a logging yard in Checheng. He even built a logging road into the mountains for his trucks to use. In its golden years the company employed more than 600 workers, and almost everyone in Checheng depended on Jhenchang for their living. Then the government changed its policy on logging, and Jhenchang had to shut down the operation that had been running in Checheng for more than 20 years. Today you can see old wooden buildings all over Checheng, left by Jhenchang Logging. These are poignant reminders of the glorious days of Taiwan's logging industry.Checheng Timber DIY CenterAddress:No. 101, Lane Min Cyuan, Checheng Village, Shuei Li, Nantou, TaiwanOpening Hours:09:00 A.M. ~ 17:00 P.M.
