Located by the side of the Sun Moon Lake, the Chapel of Christ is nestled in the hillside woods on the Hanbi Peninsula. With yellow walls and white pillars, the chapel is a Romanesque-style building characterized by classical elegance. It commands a good view of the Sun Moon Lake. The chapel was built in 1971 for personal use by late President Chiang Kai-shek and his wife as the couple visited the Sun Moon Lake. In the 921 earthquake of 1999, the outer parlor of the building and attached living quarters were damaged. The chapel was not re-opened to the public until the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration completed its restoration in 2003. It has since become a popular spot for local and foreign tourists as well as newlyweds who love to have some of their wedding photos taken there. In 2017, the management of the chapel is outsourced to a private company, which incorporates the happiness industry promoted by Hungkuang University to create a dream wedding ambience at the chapel.
