It was said long ago that in 1668 goddess Mazu followed the fleet led by Zheng Chenggong and helped him recover Taiwan island proper. The temple was founded in the same year. According to the article "The Earliest Mazu Temple" in Taiwan History Talks written by Su Tong-bing, "The earliest Mazu temple that was founded in Taiwan Province, which could be dated back to the Wan-li ruling Period in Qing dynasty, should be the Tianhou Temple in PengHu because long prior to the period, lots of fishermen from the Mainland settled in these areas; while the immigrants from the Mainland to Taiwan island proper were a half century later than that in PengHu. Except for the Mazu Temple in Penghu, the earliest Mazu Temple founded in Taiwan island proper was the Kai-Tai Tianhou Temple"
