Cishan District has prospered from its sugar refining industry in the early days. It is a special tourist attraction known for its sweet smelling bananas and Baroque architecture. Constructions, such as the stone arches of pavilions, along Jhongshan Road are in Baroque style, which was very popular during Japanese rule. Tourists interested in architecture could visit the Chishan Seminary, also known as St. Joseph's Church, on Deyi Street. Designed by Father and completed in 1950, the Seminary is an elaborate construction in the Gothic style.
