Fongshan was originally named after a mountain located in south of Fongshan District. The stretching hilly outlook is as a flying phoenix with open wings. Hence, the place is accordingly named. Fongshan, where the Kaohsiung City Government is located, is one of the early developed villages. Therefore, many historical sites are located within the City, and it has busy commercial activities. Fancy buildings and modern facilities add a new flair of outlook to the old traditional style. After many constructions and renovations of the magistrates, the most complete New Fongshan City used to have mud gates, six gate towers, and six preventative emplacements. However, after the decay of time and the reconstruction plans during the Japanese occupation era, the remaining historical buildings are Dongbianmen City Gate, Tongfu Bridge, and three Grade III historical forts named as Pingcheng, Chenglan, and Syunfong Fort.
